போன்சாய் வளர்ப்பதென்பது தோட்டக்கலை மட்டுமல்ல. ஒரு அழகுக் கலையும் கூட. மிகவும் ரசித்துச் செய்ய வேண்டிய கலை. நம் அழகுணர்ச்சி அதில் வெளிப்படும் என்றால் மிகையல்ல. போன்சாய் என்ற ஜப்பானிய சொல், புன்சாய் என்ற சீனமொழிச் சொல்லில் இருந்து வந்தது. அதன் அர்த்தம், தொட்டிமரம் என்பதாகும், அதாவது சிறு தொட்டியில் வளர்க்கப் படும் மரம் என்று பொருள்.நிறைய பேர் நினைப்பது போல, போன்சாய் என்பது இயற்கையிலேயே குட்டியாக வளரும் மரம் அல்ல. அதுவும் சாதாரண மரம் தான், ஆனால் குட்டியாக இருக்கும் படி அது பழக்கப் படுத்தப் படுகிறது. அதற்காக அதை நாம் கொடுமைப் படுத்துவதாக பொருளல்ல; வழக்கம் போல அதற்கும் நாம் தண்ணீர், காற்று, மண், சூரிய ஒளி, இன்னும் பிற தேவையான சத்துக்கள் தருகிறோம். ஆனால், பெரிதாக வளர விடாமல், அவ்வப்போது செதுக்கி விடுகிறோம். அது தான் இதன் சூட்சுமம்.
போன்சாய் மரங்கள், அரை அடி உயரத்தில் இருந்து, மூன்று அடி உயரம் வரை வளர்க்கப் படுகிறது. இம்மரங்களிலும், பூப்பூக்கும், காய் காய்க்கும். ஆனால், மரத்தை அவ்வப்போது செதுக்காவிட்டால், அது பெரிய மரமாக வளர ஆரம்பித்து விடும்.
சிறிய தட்டில், குட்டியூண்டு பெரிய மரத்தைப் பார்க்கும் போது, மிக அழகாகவும், இயற்கையாகவும் தோன்றும்.
போன்சாய் மரங்களை விதை போட்டும் வளர்க்கலாம், அல்லது கட்டிங்ஸ் மூலமும் வளர்க்கலாம். ஆனால் மிக பாங்காக எல்லாம் செய்யணும். அதை செதுக்கி, இலைகளை கிள்ளி, ஒயர் போட்டு தண்டுகளை கட்டி, நாம் விரும்பிய வடிவில் கொண்டு வரணும். கொஞ்சம் தவறினாலும் செடி செத்துவிடும். அதன் வாழ்நாள் பூராவும், நம் கவனம் அதன் மேல் தேவை, இல்லாவிட்டால் பெரிதாக வளர தொடங்கிவிடும். சில மரங்கள் நூற்றுக்கணக்கான ஆண்டுகள் கூட உயிர் வாழும்; ஆனால், எத்துணை ஆண்டுகள் என்பது முக்கியமல்ல, மரத்தில் தோற்றம், மற்றும் அது வைக்கப் பட்டிருக்கும் தொட்டியின் அழகு ஆகியவை பார்ப்பதற்கு ஒன்றுக்கொன்று எடுப்பாக இருக்க வேண்டும்.
எந்த மரத்தை வேண்டுமானால் தேர்ந்தெடுத்து, போன்சாய் ஆக வளர்க்கலாம். ஜப்பானில், பைன், பேம்பூ, ப்ளம், கமேலியா போன்ற மரங்களை அதிகமாக வளர்க்கிறார்கள். அதிகமாக போன்சாய் மரங்கள் சூரிய ஒளியில் தான் வளர்க்கப் படுகின்றன. ஆனால் ஒரு சில மரங்கள், நிழலில் வளர பழக்கப் படுத்தப் படுகின்றன.
போன்சாய் வளர்ப்பதற்கு பெரிய செலவு ஒன்றுமில்லை. ஆனால், நிறைய பொறுமையும், விடாமுயற்சியும், டைம் மேனேஜ்மெண்டும் தேவை. இதை ஒரு ஹாபியாக செய்தால், நிச்சயம் நம்மால் முடியும்.
இனி ஒவ்வொரு வாரமும் (ஞாயிறு தோறும் படிக்கலாம்), போன்சாயின் வரலாறு, அதை வளர்க்கும் முறை, அதை எப்படி செதுக்குவது, எப்படி ஒயரிங் செய்வது, எப்படி நீரூற்றுவது போன்ற விஷயங்களை ஒரு தொடராக தருகிறேன்.
